HOLY MASS AND BLESSING OF THE SACRED PALLIUM FOR THE NEW METROPOLITAN ARCHBISHOPS ON THE SOLEMNITY OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL POPE LEO XIV JUNE 29TH 2026
The Pallium is a slender band of unbleached white wool decorated with crosses, designed to be worn over the shoulders and draping at the front and rear.

The pallium is a narrow band of unbleached white wool adorned with crosses, which is worn over the shoulders and drapes at the front and back. Despite its simplicity, it carries profound symbolism. Being entrusted with it by the Holy Father signifies sharing in his pastoral mission—shepherding the flock, seeking out the lost, and guiding the stray.

The Pallium features three small nails, reminiscent of those used in Christ’s crucifixion. This design element serves to remind us of our participation in His suffering and the calling to take up our cross and follow Him. These symbolic references are thoughtfully incorporated into the humble design of this vestment.

The Pallium Mass provided an occasion for bishops worldwide to gather in celebration of this significant feast. It also marked the conclusion of a two-day meeting of cardinals. Archbishop Moth described the event as a demonstration of “the universality of the Church.” The highlight of the Mass was the presentation of the Pallium by Pope Leo XIV

“It was an incredibly humbling experience. As one of several new archbishops, I felt a strong sense of fellowship with my fellow recipients and a close association with the Holy Father. There was also an opportunity after the Mass for a brief exchange of words with him, which further exemplified the closeness that the vestment symbolises.”

Video Following the event, Archbishop Moth spoke to Christian Art, offering insight into the rich symbolism and significance of this modest yet meaningful vestment:
