The Solemn Liturgy of the Passion of the Lord–The Celebration has Three Main Parts

The Solemn Liturgy of the Passion of the Lord is the designated Good Friday service within the Roman Catholic Church. It memorialises the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. This service is referred to as a “liturgy” rather than a Mass, as there is no Eucharistic consecration conducted on Good Friday.

Liturgy of the Word.
Scripture passages are read aloud, including the Passion narrative from the Gospel of John. This is succeeded by a homily and designated intercessions, which serve as prayers for the Church and the wider community.

Veneration of the Cross
A cross is presented to the congregation, who are then invited to demonstrate reverence—such as by kissing or bowing—as a gesture of their respect for Christ’s sacrifice.

Holy Communion
The communion is administered using hosts consecrated on the previous day (Holy Thursday), as Mass is not celebrated on Good Friday.

The service is distinguished by a solemn and contemplative atmosphere, often featuring an unfurnished altar, periods of silence with no music, and clergy dressed in red vestments to symbolise Christ’s Passion and martyrdom.
