The 2025 Jubilee marks a significant celebratory event within the Catholic Church, designated to occur in the year 2025 and announced by Pope John Paul II at the conclusion of the 2000 Great Jubilee. This upcoming Jubilee follows the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy held during 2015–2016.

Pope Boniface VIII established the first Christian Jubilee, and since that time, the Church has designated each subsequent Jubilee as a special period of grace and renewal, providing the faithful with the opportunity to receive a plenary indulgence.

A Jubilee Year is traditionally observed by the Universal Church approximately every 25 years. It is a designated year intended to encourage members of the faith community to undertake pilgrimages, engage in sincere reflection and repentance for personal shortcomings, extend forgiveness to others, and renew their commitment to spiritual growth.

Please, Holy Spirit, please fill me with your presence. Please enlighten my mind with your truth and guide my steps along the right path. Grant me your wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, reverence, and respect for the Lord. Help me to embody the qualities reflected in your fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. I submit my will to you and kindly ask that my life may serve as a reflection of your glory. Amen.

In the biblical tradition, the Jubilee year is a designated period occurring every 50 years, subsequent to seven cycles of seven sabbath years. During this time, Israelite law stipulated the cancellation of debts, the emancipation of slaves, and the redistribution of land to its original owners. As outlined in Leviticus 25, this practice served as a socio-economic reset aimed at promoting social justice and mitigating extreme poverty. Later, Jesus associated the Jubilee with his mission, referring to it as bringing the “year of the Lord’s favour” and representing the ultimate liberation from spiritual debt.

As articulated in the opening words of Pope Francis’ Bull of Indiction, “Spes non confundit. Hope does not disappoint,” hope is the central theme of the upcoming Ordinary Jubilee of 2025. The Jubilee Year began with the traditional opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica on December 24, 2024, by Pope Francis, and will conclude with the closing of the Holy Door on January 6, 2026, during the celebration of the Epiphany of the Lord.
The observance spans from Christmas Eve (December 24, 2024) through Epiphany (January 6, 2026).
In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future will bring.
Pope Francis

Pope Francis has officially declared that the year 2025 will be designated as a Year of Jubilee with the tradition of the Opening and Closing of the Holy Door, read this article from the National Catholic Register.)

The 2025 Jubilee is centered around the theme “Pilgrims of Hope.” As His Holiness Pope Francis eloquently articulated:
We must nurture the flame of hope that has been entrusted to us, and assist others in acquiring renewed strength and confidence by approaching the future with openness, trust, and a forward-looking perspective.

Throughout the Jubilee Year, the Holy Father encourages each of us to undertake a journey of hope, so that, “Through our example and actions, hope may be communicated to all those who are yearning for it.”
The Diocese of Hexham & Newcastle will take this opportunity to revisit its foundational Diocesan Vision throughout the Jubilee Year. An array of resources will be made available for parishes, clergy, religious communities, lay individuals, educators, and others, focusing on both the Jubilee Year and our Diocesan Vision. This is poised to be a significant year in the life of the Church.

The most recent Holy Year of Mercy occurred in 2015; however, the upcoming 2025 Jubilee aligns with the customary 25-year interval between such events. In the year 2000, both the global community and the Catholic Church were preparing for the dawn of a new millennium.
