The Holy Father’s Health and Recovery
The Catholic Church continues to pray for Pope Leo XIV following his operation at Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. According to the Holy See Press Office, the Holy Father underwent thoracic surgery involving the removal of the lower lobe of his right lung, using a video-assisted surgical technique.
An examination undertaken during the operation confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, a diagnosis already suspected following earlier investigations. The medical team reported that the operation was successful and that no complications occurred.
Following surgery, Pope Leo regained consciousness normally and returned to his hospital room after a period of observation. While the immediate surgical outcome offers encouragement, his recovery and subsequent treatment remain matters for careful medical supervision.
A Mass Marking Ten Years of Amoris Laetitia
On Wednesday, 14 October 2026, the Church gathered in St Peter’s Square for the Eucharistic celebration concluding the meeting commemorating the tenth anniversary of Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, The Joy of Love.
Originally scheduled to be presided over by Pope Leo XIV, the Mass was instead celebrated by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle during the Holy Father’s hospitalisation. Cardinal Tagle delivered the homily prepared by the Pope, allowing his pastoral reflections to reach the assembled faithful despite his physical absence.
The Pope’s Homily: A Living Gospel of Love
The homily prepared by Pope Leo XIV and delivered by Cardinal Tagle reflected upon the continuing importance of Amoris Laetitia, published by Pope Francis in 2016. The anniversary offered an opportunity to consider how its teaching can continue to shape the pastoral life of the Church.
At the heart of this teaching is the conviction that families are places where Christian love must be lived rather than merely discussed. Marriage calls spouses to patience, fidelity, mutual respect and forgiveness, while the wider Church is called to accompany families with understanding, wisdom and compassion.
The occasion also reflected the communion of the universal Church, embracing different cultures, languages and liturgical traditions while remaining united in faith.
The Prayer of the Faithful: A Special Petition for Pope Leo
One of the most moving features of the official Mass booklet appears in the Universal Prayer. Among the intercessions offered in several languages, a petition in Portuguese was dedicated specifically to Pope Leo XIV, asking that he might experience the comfort of God’s presence and the prayerful support of the entire Church throughout his convalescence.
Other petitions were offered for the Church, Christian families, the Chaldean Church, civil society and married couples, expressing the international character of the celebration.
The Liturgy of the Word: The Greatest Gift Is Love
The first reading, proclaimed in Spanish, was taken from Saint Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians (12:31–13:13). This celebrated passage places charity above every other spiritual gift, reminding Christians that knowledge, faith and extraordinary accomplishments have little lasting value when they are separated from love.
The Responsorial Psalm, Psalm 99, invited the congregation to rejoice in belonging to God, while the Gospel according to Saint John (15:12–17) proclaimed Christ’s commandment that his disciples should love one another as he has loved them.
Together, these readings provided the spiritual foundation for the anniversary celebration. Christian love is not simply an emotion or ideal, but a vocation expressed through fidelity, sacrifice, forgiveness and the daily responsibilities of family and community life.
A Celebration of Hope and Communion
The anniversary Mass was more than a commemoration of an important papal document. It was a renewed invitation to recognise the family as a living community of faith, hope and charity, and to respond with compassion to those experiencing difficulty, uncertainty or suffering.
For Catholics following the Holy Father’s recovery, the celebration offered a reminder that the Church remains united through the Eucharist and the bonds of prayer. Even in illness and physical absence, the ministry of Pope Leo XIV continues to inspire affection, solidarity and confidence in God’s providence.
Sacred Music and Eucharistic Communion
The music selected for the Mass reinforced its themes of love, unity and Christian discipleship. The booklet includes the Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei from the traditional De Angelis setting, together with congregational hymns emphasising the unity of the faithful.
During the preparation of the gifts, O Signore, raccogli i tuoi figli expressed the gathering of God’s people into one Church. The Communion hymns included Amatevi, fratelli and Dov’è carità e amore, both recalling the Gospel’s central commandment of mutual love.
The Eucharistic Prayer for Various Needs, using the form God Guides His Church Along the Way of Salvation, placed the celebration within the wider pilgrimage of the Church. Its prayer for unity remembered Pope Leo, the bishops, priests, deacons and all the faithful.
A Prayer for Our Holy Father and All Families
Heavenly Father, source of all love and mercy, we entrust our Holy Father Pope Leo XIV to Your loving care. Grant him healing, strength and peace throughout his recovery. Guide those entrusted with his medical treatment, and sustain him through the prayers of the universal Church. Bless married couples and families, especially those facing illness, uncertainty or suffering. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Family of Nazareth, unite us in faith, hope and charity. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
