14 October 2026 | St Peter’s Square, Vatican City

The tenth anniversary of Pope Francis’s apostolic exhortation Amoris laetitia was marked by a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle. Unable to attend while recovering from surgery, Pope Leo XIV remained present through a written message to the meeting and a homily prepared for the Mass and read by Cardinal Tagle. [1–3]

A Message from Pope Leo XIV — 13 October

In his message at the conclusion of the anniversary meeting, Pope Leo XIV thanked the participants for their prayers and for the experiences they had shared. He expressed particular gratitude to families who had spoken about their joys, struggles and hopes, and to the leaders of the Eastern Catholic Churches and episcopal conferences. [1]

He encouraged participants to share what they had learned with their dioceses and episcopal conferences, and to ensure that families take an active part in the life and mission of their local Churches. The message ended with his Apostolic Blessing and a request for continued prayer.

Cardinal Tagle Presides at St Peter’s

The Mass took place at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday 14 October on the parvis of St Peter’s Basilica. The original liturgical notice had announced that Pope Leo XIV would preside; following his surgery, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle celebrated in his place. [2, 4]

Cardinal Tagle read the homily written by the Holy Father. The celebration concluded a Vatican meeting held from 7 to 14 October to reflect on how the Church can proclaim the Gospel with families today, ten years after the publication of Amoris laetitia. [2, 5]

The Pope’s Homily — Love Lived Each Day

Pope Leo began with the central insight of Pope Francis’s exhortation: the joy of love in families is inseparable from the joy of the Church. Reflecting on St Paul’s teaching in First Corinthians, he presented love not as an abstract ideal but as a patient, generous and enduring commitment shaped by grace. [3]

The homily called attention to marriage preparation, the formation of young people in virtue, and the daily witness of parents, children, grandparents and older people. It also stressed that vulnerable families and those facing crises need encouragement and care rather than judgement. [3]

A Church That Is a Family of Families

The Pope urged the Church to become a ‘family of families’, where young couples are encouraged, parents supported and older people valued for their wisdom. He highlighted shared prayer, participation in the Sunday Eucharist and the sacraments as foundations of family spirituality. [3]

In a separate passage spoken by Cardinal Tagle in his own capacity, the Cardinal explained that he was presiding by special papal mandate to make visible ecclesial communion with Patriarch Paul III Nona of Baghdad of the Chaldeans, who participated in the celebration. [3]

The Liturgy of the Word

The first reading, 1 Corinthians 12:31–13:13, proclaimed the enduring primacy of love. Psalm 99 (100) presented the assembly as God’s people and the sheep of his flock. The Gospel, John 15:12–17, placed Christ’s command to love one another at the heart of the celebration. [6]

The liturgical booklet also records the opening prayer for families and the multilingual Prayer of the Faithful. One petition, proclaimed in Portuguese, asked for Pope Leo to experience the support of the Church’s prayers and a peaceful, full recovery. [6]

Sacred Music and Eucharistic Communion

The official booklet names the Kyrie and Sanctus from the De angelis setting, and the offertory hymn O Signore, raccogli i tuoi figli. Its text evokes a Church gathered into unity, like grain becoming one bread. [6]

The Eucharistic Prayer for Various Needs, in the form ‘God Guides His Church along the Way of Salvation’, further expressed the themes of communion, divine accompaniment and the Church’s pilgrimage in the world. [6]

The Holy Father’s Recovery and the Church’s Prayer

A Holy See Press Office statement dated 13 October reported that Pope Leo XIV had undergone scheduled thoracic surgery. According to the medical statement, the operation was successful and without complications. These details describe the official information available at that date and should not be interpreted as a prediction about his subsequent recovery. [7]

The anniversary liturgy gave that concern a spiritual expression through its specific intercession for the Holy Father. The focus of the Mass nevertheless remained the Gospel of love and the Church’s pastoral responsibility to accompany families. [6]

A Celebration of Hope and Communion

The anniversary of Amoris laetitia offered an opportunity to revisit a document devoted to the beauty and challenges of family life. Pope Leo’s message, his homily and Cardinal Tagle’s celebration together emphasised that families are not merely recipients of pastoral care: they are active participants in the Church’s mission. [1–3]

For those following the celebration from afar, the published texts, the liturgical booklet and the video provide a lasting record of a Mass centred on faith, hope, love and prayerful solidarity with the Holy Father.

A Prayer for Our Holy Father and All Families

Heavenly Father, sustain Pope Leo XIV in his recovery and surround him with the prayers of the Church. Bless married couples, parents, children, grandparents and all who seek your love in difficult circumstances. Make our homes places of patience, forgiveness and welcome. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
