The Nicene Creed

The Jubilee Year 2025 marks the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council held in Nicaea in the year 325 where three hundred bishops affirmed the Church’s doctrine concerning the divinity of Christ. Specifically, they confirmed the belief in the Holy Trinity of God, The Holy Spirit and Jesus as the son of God. This was conslidated at the First Council of Constantinople in 381. These doctrinal affirmations are expressed in the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, which we recite in prayer during our weekly Eucharistic celebrations and liturgical observances, commemorating the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Furthermore, the Council of Nicaea established important principles and criteria for determining the date of Easter each year. It is particularly noteworthy that, through divine providence, the Christian communities of the East and West will observe Easter on the same day, April 20th, 2025. As Pope Francis highlights, “The Council of Nicaea is a pivotal moment in the history of the Church. Its anniversary serves as a reminder for all Christians to come together in celebration and gratitude for the Holy Trinity and for Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who is ‘of one essence with the Father’ and who has revealed to us this mystery of divine love.”

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen

Credo in unum Deum,
Patrem omnipotentem,

Confiteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorum.
Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum, et vitam venturi saeculi. Amen
